Switzerland

October 2021

Overview

This is a place to share photos from our trip to Switzerland in the first half of October 2021. This page is currently not very performant. The photos are not in any special order, other than roughly by date taken. I plan to update this later to make it prettier and add context to the photos. However, my goal is to actually get these online before spending tons of time tweaking the site.

Places we visited

Area Notes
Appenzell We landed in Zurich and took the train about 1.5 hours to Appenzell. Appenzell is a rural area and the people were incredibly nice and welcoming. The restaurant on the side of the mountain at Ebenalp was featured by National Geographic and made this area famous. The locals are not super happy about it. Generally, there is a cable car to lift you up Ebenalp, but due to high winds it was closed. We made the strenuous hike up and it turned out to be one of my favorite parts of the trip.
Luzern An excellent old European city. We spent tons of time just walking around here and eating great food.
Lugano Lugano is right on the Italian border. We saw some signs stating LA-gano, making a comparison to Los Angeles. This seemed like a fair comparison. Lugano was my least favorite stop on the trip and would be skipped next time.
St. Moritz Ski town for rich folks. Some really nice hikes nearby though.
Zermatt See ze Matterhorn in Zermatt. A really beautiful place. Very touristy, but for good reason. The glacier is worth the expensive ride up, involving a gondola and two cable cars each way.
Lausanne A French speaking city near the French border. Very beautiful and relaxing place to stroll around after a heavy few days of hiking near the Matterhorn.
Lauterbrunnen This is the most beautiful place I've ever seen. The Lauterbrunnen Valley was like a vacation within the vacation.
Zurich We just stayed the one night here before getting up early to go to the airport the next morning. Like New York, but upgraded to business class.
